La Paloma artists show their creativity

FALLBROOK — The ArtDay program at La Paloma Elementary School is in full swing again this year and students are enjoying the opportunity to create original artwork in the styles of the great master artists.

Beginning with a brief history of an art period or movement, art teacher Vonda Day introduces the children to a specific artist representative of that period. Utilizing a large screen and high-resolution monitor, she provides students with the biographical background and examples of the artist’s work.

Students then begin the hands-on portion of the lesson, where they focus on specific art principles as they create an original piece based upon a piece by the artist studied.

Mrs. Day encourages the children to begin with rough gesture sketches, considering basic forms and perspective as well as light and shadow. Once the gesture drawing is complete, students use quality color pencils or paints to add color to their pieces and complete their work.
