La Paloma's new student government announced

FALLBROOK — The votes are in! There is a new government at La Paloma Elementary School.

The Student Council officers for the 2008-2009 school year are President Adam Z., Vice President Kendall M., Secretary Haley G., Treasurer Jimmy J. and Governor Stephanie R.

Each year, those interested in running for Student Council submit petitions filled with signatures of students to the vice principal. Once the petitions have been turned in on time and accepted, the students post their “candidate statements” in the quad.

“The school was covered with banners, posters and flyers,” said Vice Principal Nancy Foster. “Some [candidates] even made stickers for students to wear.”

The primary elections are held two days later and the finalists are announced after the tally is completed. The finalists then prepare a speech, which is videotaped and broadcast throughout the classrooms on the day of the election.

After the student body votes and the new officers are elected, each classroom then elects two representatives to attend the Associated Student Government meetings once a month.

The combined efforts of this Associated Student Government have resulted in events such as the Kids’ Food Drive, Crazy Hair Day, School Spirit Days and Red Ribbon Week.

La Paloma’s famous Friday Fun Days were implemented by last year’s Student Government and will be continued again this year. Friday lunchtime activities such as line dancing, bowling, hockey, badminton and hula-hoops are all the result of the Student Government’s hard work.
