Rotary speaker talks about crime of rape

FALLBROOK — On October 14, Dana Point resident John Chaffetz, a noted author, lecturer and highly successful entrepreneur, addressed Fallbrook Village Rotary Club.

Chaffetz detailed his experience as a jury foreman on a rape case. The jury was impaneled for five weeks and the story of the victim so touched Chaffetz that he felt compelled to write a book about the trial.

During the course of doing the research for the book, he learned more about sexual crimes committed against women of all ages. His research revealed the deep trauma suffered by the victims, as well as their families and friends.

The message behind Chaffetz’s talk was that citizens need to push local, county, state and federal officials to aggressively prosecute sexually-based crimes. He said that a woman is raped every 2.5 minutes in the United States, which equates to roughly 210,000 victims per year who suffer physical and psychological damage.
