Berlin Airlift story to be discussed

Book Talk, the community book club sponsored by Friends of the Fallbrook Library, will meet Thursday, November 13, at 1:30 p.m. at the Fallbrook Public Utility District, 990 East Mission Road.

The featured selection is “The Candy Bombers: The Untold Story of the Berlin Airlift and America’s Finest Hour” by Andrei Cherny.

It is the dramatic true story of America’s response to the Berlin blockade, when American and British pilots risked their lives to airlift in 4.6 billion pounds of food and supplies from June 1948 until the blockade was lifted in May 1949.

The book’s title comes from the efforts of pilot Hal Halvorsen, who won Berliners’ hearts by secretly dropping his and his buddies’ candy rations by parachute into the waiting hands of the city’s children.

The discussion will be led by Judy Dorrenbacher and is open to the public. No reservations are required and attendees need not be members of the Friends. For more information, call (760) 420-9957.
