Fallbrook Writers Read features anthology on war

FALLBROOK — “War Is: Soldiers, Survivors and Storytellers Talk About War” will be the featured book at the Fallbrook Writers Read free monthly reading on Wednesday, November 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Café des Artistes.

Award-winning young adult genre writer and editor Patty Campbell of Fallbrook co-edited the recently published anthology with Marc Aronson and will read from her introduction and the collection, which reflects the editors’ opposing viewpoints on the nature of war.

The divergent pieces look war straight in the face and provide an invaluable resource for teenagers considering military service and for their parents. Vietnam War veteran Col. Steve Fisher (USMC, ret.) will join Campbell to read excerpts from Aronson’s introduction and selected writings.

The featured reading will be following by an open mic session for anyone eager to share his or her original short fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry. Open mic readers have five minutes each. For more information about reading, call event organizer Kit-Bacon Gressitt at (760) 522-1064.

Scheduled in conjunction with the Fallbrook Art Center’s current exhibit, “Decades of Conflict: World War II to Present,” attendees of the reading will have complimentary access to the exhibit during the evening’s event.

Café des Artistes, at 103 South Main Avenue, will open for the reading at 5 p.m., with a special supper menu available. The fourth through eighth grade reading is from 5:30 to 6, when the adult and high school reading begins.

Entrance is through the café from the rear parking lot behind the Art Center on Main. Fallbrook Writers Read is hosted by Café des Artistes and supported by Fallbrook independent bookseller The Book Nook.
