Woman's Club hosts Hot Flashes Follies

FALLBROOK — The Hot Flashes Follies, a senior dance company, performed at the general meeting of the Fallbrook Woman’s Club on October 14.

The entourage of dancers, spanning ages of 60-something to 80-plus, sang and danced to old familiars like “Dancing Fool,” “Singing in the Rain” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie” with a red, white and blue George M. Cohen patriotic finale.

Soloists included “I Won’t Dance” and “Could I Have This Dance?” by Joanie Graff, a Phyllis Diller look-alike by Ann Webster, a “Nutcracker” spoof by LouAnn Sheaffer and award-winning Irish dancer Lou Gullans performing to a jig and hornpipe Medley.

The lively show had club members toe-tapping along with the performers in a repertoire of mellow show tunes and upbeat comedy.

The group’s dance and comedy acts, with routines from Broadway to Big Band tunes and an occasional nod to Nashville, are frequently compared to the Palm Springs Follies. The women have danced together since 1986, appeared in the first Bob Hope Christmas show in the United States and performed with Les Brown’s Band.

Their performance venues include the Wild Animal Park, Del Mar Fair, Avo Theater and many other civic and charitable organizations. The group’s producer and director is Marilee Garcia.
