AAUW celebrates educational foundations

FALLBROOK — Celebrating the Educational Foundations, the Fallbrook branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), recently gathered at the Fallbrook Woman’s Club for a colorful tea and to hear speakers. Education Foundations (EF) provides funds for post-graduate studies to women.

This year’s speaker was Ronnee Schneider, a recent recipient of an EF award and currently a professor of Women’s Studies at UCSD.

Schneider, who published the book “Righting Feminism: Conservative Women and American Politics,” spoke to the group about women in politics.

Current studies show that women are being elected to public office in greater numbers than ever before. Schneider indicated that this tendency will change public policy toward legislation to improve the status of women.

Schneider’s opinion was that in the recent presidential campaign there was unfair reporting from both political parties about women running for office. The data also confirms that more women vote than men.

Members of AAUW were also treated to reports from this past summer’s Tech Trek campers.

Five seventh-graders were selected to attend a math-/science-/technology-oriented camp held at UCSD for a week. The girls reported on their experiences and shared scrapbooks and mementos with the group.

The girls and their parents were seated at tables especially decorated by AAUW members in various themes.

Funding for Tech Trek is provided by the annual AAUW Garden Tour.

Brunch was included and was planned and prepared by the hospitality committee headed by Guity Balow and the program was directed by EF chair Jill Alperstein.

AAUW welcomes new members who have an Associate of Arts degree or beyond and who are interested in equality for women and girls through advocacy, education and research.

Membership information may be obtained by calling Julie Norberg at (760) 728-8700.
