SR76: a highway of sorrows

The widening and realignment of the five-mile stretch of SR76 from Mission to I-15 could change the character of Fallbrook forever!

CalTrans has been assigned the responsibility to develop SR76 into a four-lane conventional highway, two lanes each way separated by a concrete barrier, with room to widen it to six lanes in the future.

Yes, a four-lane conventional highway expandable to six lanes in the future is a welcome improvement to a highway noted for its high number of fatalities.

Of the two alternative routes proposed by CalTrans, the “Existing Alignment Alternative” is full of “sorrows” for over 4,000 people residing adjacent to existing SR76 from Mission to Interstate 15.

Fire and emergency vehicle response and evacuation time may increase, some roads may be closed off, increased local commuting time and environmental pollution are some of the major concerns with the proposed “Existing Alignment Alternative.”
