Giving credit where credit is due

Growing up I was never big into sending thank you notes. It wasn’t until I was married that my wife, as she says, “trained me” and I began to send thank you notes to people. Even after almost 13 years of marriage, my wife still has to remind me on occasion to send them out.

It’s not that I don’t want people to know how thankful I am and how much I appreciate them. It’s just something that I seem to have a bad habit of overlooking. Yes, I admit it; it’s a bad habit.

I don’t think there are too many people who struggle with being thankful. I just think there are a lot of people who struggle with taking the time to verbalize their thankfulness. Just like me.

Giving credit where credit is due is essential to our relationship with people and with God. Scripture says, “Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world know what he has done.” (1 Chronicles 16:8)

When we say thank you to someone, especially to God, we are proclaiming to everyone how great we think they really are. I can’t think of a better person to thank than God. Without him nothing is possible.

So maybe the next time we get in the dumps or even the next time things are going great, we should put our thanks into words and tell God how much we really do appreciate all he has done for us. It never hurts to give credit where credit is due and tell the world about his greatness.
