Herbert (Herb) L. Young

Herbert (Herb) L. Young of Fallbrook died December 31, 2008, at age 92. He was born November 12, 1916, in Jersey City, NJ, and spent his childhood in Rockville Center, NY. He later attended Colorado School of Mines and graduated with a degree in mining engineering in 1939.

He worked in Chile and Arizona as a mining engineer and later moved to Long Beach, CA, where he met and married his wife Dodie in 1952. A short time later they moved to Mammoth Lakes, CA, where they built and operated the first ski lodge primarily for skiers, The Christiania.

After 12 years of hard work, they sold their business and became deeply involved in environmental matters, believing that people do not have to destroy the earth purely for monetary gain. The culmination of this dream led them to the establishment of the Young Environmental Program at the Colorado School of Mines. With this program they hoped to influence young people and people of all ages about the importance of preserving and nurturing the planet on which we live.

Herb was a member of the Fallbrook Planning Group and worked as a volunteer at the Bottom Shelf of the Fallbrook Library.

Contributions may be made to the Young Environmental Symposium Program, Colorado School of Mines Foundation, 1600 Arapahoe St., Golden, CO 80401-1851.
