Burns receives award as BWC celebrates birthday

BONSALL — Bonsall Woman’s Club (BWC) celebrated its 29th birthday at its general meeting on February 5 at San Luis Rey Downs Country Club.

Ten of BWC’s 19 past presidents attended and received recognition for their continuing service. Each woman spoke about her experience as president and how much she still enjoys being a member of the organization.

The highlight of the celebration came when BWC President Pat Harvey awarded the club’s Big Heart Award to Bettye Burns, a member who Harvey and her committee felt personifies a “Big Heart.”

“Bettye has a way of working her magic into each of our hearts,” Harvey said.

Burns, who has been a BWC member for 10 years, faced many health challenges over the years with courage and an unwavering calm and cheerful demeanor.

“As a breast cancer survivor, Bettye willingly shares her experiences and offers support to others,” Harvey related.

Despite the health problems to distract her during this period, Burns served as first vice president, dean of chairmen, chairman of today’s living and yearbook advertising and continued to serve on fundraising projects and in many other capacities.

“Currently, she organizes our greeters and with a passion calls members who have not attended our meetings to find out how they are and to keep them abreast of happenings in the club,” Harvey said.

When asked by Harvey, “If you have been touched in a special way by Bettye, please stand as a special tribute to her for her love and commitment to the members of the Bonsall Woman’s Club,” every member enthusiastically stood up and applauded.
