FBI investigate Washington Mutual robbery

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the San Diego Sheriff’s Department are seeking public assistance in identifying an unknown male responsible for robbing the Washington Mutual Bank, located at 1091 S. Mission Road, at approximately 5:55 p.m. on Thursday, February 26.

According to a FBI press release, the robber entered the bank, approached a teller, and presented a demand note for cash. After receiving a sum of money, the suspect exited the bank and fled in a silver two-door Honda.

Witnesses said the suspect was “confident” in asking for the sum of cash, even though it did not appear that he had a weapon on him. The robbery was over within minutes, and a witness said others in the bank did not know what had happened until the robber had left the bank.

The bank teller who was handed the note immediately called the Sheriff's department, and deputies arrived shortly after the robbery.

According to FBI agent Darrell Foxworthy, the robber is believed to be the suspect of a series of bank thefts.

The robber is described as a 50 to 55 year old white male weighing about 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing a beige baseball cap, sunglasses, short-sleeved shirt with a sweater vest.

At about 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 27, Sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported robbery at Washington Mutual/Chase bank at

1091 South Mission Road.

According to Sheriff’s Sergeant Ron McCracken, the suspect entered the bank and handed a note to a teller demanding money. The suspect then fled the scene traveling south on Mission Road in a silver four door sedan, believed to be a Honda.

The suspect is described as an “older white male” and was wearing a yellow polo shirt, sweater vest, and white baseball cap.

Sheriff’s deputies began initial investigation, but Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents will be the lead agency.
