'Cats' a great family experience

FALLBROOK — “Take them now. They’ll remember it forever.”

It turns out that the Fallbrook Players’ tag line for their upcoming show, “Cats,” is more than just good advertising. Psychological research suggests that experiences make people happier than possessions.

According to CNN, that’s in part because the initial joy of acquiring a new object, such as a new outfit, fades over time as people become accustomed to seeing it every day, experts said.

Experiences, on the other hand, continue to provide happiness through memories long after the event has occurred.

A sense of relatedness to others – getting closer to friends, family and community – may be one of the reasons why experiences generate more happiness.

Maggie Skidmore, a volunteer for the Fallbrook Players, agrees.

“Material possessions have some appeal in the short term, but for lasting memories, nothing beats a great shared family experience,” she said. “That is what makes having a show such as ‘Cats’ right here in Fallbrook so exciting. The visual impact and the amazing music will have families talking about their experience and will form a lasting family memory, just like the famous song in ‘Cats.’”

“Cats” will be playing at the Mission Theatre March 20-April 5. Tickets may be purchased online at http://www.fallbrookplayers.com or at the Mission Theatre Box Office.

Show times are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.

“This is the perfect show for the whole family to attend,” Skidmore said. “By supporting community activities such as this, we can help assure these types of experiences will be there in the future, and I can promise you there will be plenty to talk about at the dinner table after your family has experienced ‘Cats.’”
