Guac Girls lose in indoor league finals, share regular-season title

The Guac Girls, who are comprised of Fallbrook High School field hockey players, shared the regular-season North County Indoor League title and lost in the championship game.

“I was very pleased,” coach Kathy Waite said of the season. “We did great. I have no qualms.”

Since the indoor league takes place outside of the CIF field hockey season, the team cannot officially represent Fallbrook High School and thus cannot call themselves the Warriors.

They has adopted the name Guac Girls for tournaments and indoor play. Waite coaches both the Guac Girls and the high school varsity team.

The North County Indoor League played its games at the Escondido Sports Center and consisted of ten teams. The most recent season was the first in which twelfth-graders were allowed, but since part of the purpose of the off-season indoor league is to refine skills for the subsequent high school season, Waite chose not to utilize any Fallbrook High School seniors.

The Guac Girls finished the regular season with a 5-1 record, losing only a 3-2 match to the Wargles comprised of San Pasqual High School players. The Guac Girls had beaten the Flyers, the off-season team of Scripps Ranch High School, while the Flyers had defeated the Wargles in the regular season to create a three-way tie for first place.

The seeding for first place was based upon fewest goals allowed, giving the Guac Girls the advantage. The Guac Girls and Flyers squared off in the championship game February 28 with the Flyers taking a 5-1 victory for the championship. “They killed us,” Waite said.

The Fallbrook squad’s only goal was scored by Jessica Fox.

The trip to the finals was the third in four years for the Guac Girls, who also reached the championship game in 2006 and 2007. The Guac Girls finished third in the 2008 indoor season.
