Warrior mermen set 4x50 freestyle record at Cougar Relays , JV boys take first, set 3x100 breaststroke meet record

Fallbrook High School’s boys’ swim team finished second in the Cougar Relays held March 14 at Palomar College while winning four events, including the 4x50 freestyle race in which Fallbrook’s swimmers set a meet record.

Rancho Buena Vista was the boys’ winner in the Cougar Relays, giving Fallbrook boys’ coach Bill Richardson his first loss to either Vista or Rancho Buena Vista. “It’s a little disappointing, but it’s inevitable, I guess, eventually,” Richardson said.

Fallbrook’s junior varsity boys, however, took first place. The JV boys also won four events and set a meet record.

The meet conflicted with the Scholastic Aptitude Test given that day, and a handful of Warrior swimmers missed the meet to take the college admittance test. “We could have given them a better run for their money if we had everybody,” Richardson said.

The Warriors opened their season the day before with a home meet against El Camino. Fallbrook’s 112-70 win included Geoff Jamison achieving a CIF meet automatic qualifying time in the 50-yard freestyle. Jamison also earned a CIF meet consideration time in the 500-yard freestyle and several other swimmers along with divers Chris Knitter and Luke Jones also obtained CIF consideration times, as did the Warriors’ 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.

At the Cougar Relays Fallbrook’s 4x50 team of Cameron Manino, Mike Maryn, Kevin Reichel, and Jamison won the race with a time of 1:35.85 to break the meet record of 1:35.95 set by Oceanside in 2001. “I had no idea that we would be even close to it. It was just a big surprise,” said Richardson. “It wasn’t my top lineup, and for them to break the record was pretty impressive.”

Kai Bowman, Reichel, and Jamison won the 3x100 freestyle race in 2:36.21. The 3x100 butterfly team of Manino, Jones, and Kellen Shanahan took first place in with a time of 3:00.35. The 3x200 individual medley relay team of Jamison, Parker Smith, and Reichel won their race in 6:38.16.

The Warriors finished second in the 4x50 medley, the 3x200 freestyle, the 4x100 freestyle, and the 3x100 backstroke. Fallbrook placed third in the 3x50 freestyle and fourth in the 3x100 breaststroke.

While the 3x100 breaststroke relay was the weakest showing for the varsity boys, Fallbrook’s junior varsity boys won that event while setting a meet record. Sam Torres, Jonathan Montoya, and Dane Oppenborn completed the race in 3:50.56. The previous record of 3:58.52 was set by Ramona in 2001.

Alec Carpenter, Oppenborn, and Ryan Wilson won the JV 3x100 medley relay with a time of 3:32.10. Nico Gratz, Adam McGrath, and Carpenter took first place in the 3x100 backstroke and posted a time of 3:40.77. Tyler Vanderstelt, Jordan Harmer, and Thomas Fitzpatrick required 3:14.73 to win the 3x100 freestyle relay.

“We’re just looking forward to a good year,” Richardson said. “We should challenge for the league title.”
