Lifetime volunteer Poulter to be honored April 20

BONSALL — A special reception honoring Mary Jane Poulter for her lifetime of achievements in volunteerism will be hosted by the Bonsall Woman’s Club (BWC) on Monday, April 20, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Fresco’s Restaurant in River Village.

Members of BWC, the Bonsall and Fallbrook Chambers, Rotary and other organizations and friends of Poulter are invited to attend this event, co-chaired by Barbara Arena and Jane Hammond. Refreshments include hors d’oeuvres and a no-host wine bar.

Poulter has devoted much of her time over the past 30 years to help BWC and her other organizations achieve their service goals to the community, according to Pat Harvey, BWC president.

Among Poulter’s many former offices are BWC president and first vice president, Bonsall Chamber president and vice president and Honorary Mayor of Bonsall. Poulter also served on numerous committees with these organizations.

Assisting, training and providing leadership for youth has always been a high priority with Poulter, Harvey said. She is currently focusing on giving painting lessons to a handicapped child who has a natural aptitude for art.

In the past, Poulter trained cub scouts, den leaders, cub masters and unit commissioners. She volunteered as a Bonsall 4-H Club leader, chaired the Bonsall Student of the Month program and served as a YMCA youth counselor leader for sponsored clubs.

Feeling a need to help the elderly and others in the community, Harvey said that Poulter coordinated the first Meals on Wheels in Bonsall.

She was chairman and founder of Sheriff Appreciation Day and used her photography and writing skills to promote the Bonsall Chamber by being its Web site administrator and writing its newsletter for publication in the Village News.

Experiencing some personal family problems, Harvey related that Poulter rose to the occasion by providing support and help to her seriously ill brother who had cancer, and a few years later, took charge of making life as pleasant as possible for her and her husband Roger’s very elderly mothers.

Poulter’s numerous awards have ranged from BWC’s Volunteer of the Year to California State Senate’s Woman of the Year, Bonsall Community Leader of the Year and Soroptimist International of Fallbrook’s Woman of the Year.

Most recently, she was nominated by BWC to receive the prestigious Jennie Award given by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC).

This award will be presented to one clubwoman in each of eight regions in the United States for their personal excellence in the areas of outstanding commitment to club, community and family. The award is named in honor of GFWC founder Jane Cunningham Croly.

Reservations for the Poulter reception may be made by contacting Barbara Arena at (760) 758-0339 or Jane Hammond at (760) 941-8051.
