Friends of Fallbrook Library rank No. 1

San Diego County Library Director Jose Aponte says he has never seen anything like the Friends of the Fallbrook Library.

The 33-year veteran of public service – the last four as director of the 33 libraries in the San Diego County Library system – says the Fallbrook group, established in 1963, ranks right at the top.

“They are the strongest Friends group in the county,” said Aponte. “These folks know how to get it done.”

The local nonprofit group has raised $2.3 million for the new Fallbrook Library, been actively involved in the design of the new facility and served as a sounding board for county officials.

“[The Friends] came to the table with hard-earned resources,” Aponte said.

In addition to raising money to furnish the new library with furniture, chairs, tables, shelves, books, computers and carpeting, the Friends volunteers say they intend to raise an additional $400,000 for book collections, to complete the Outdoor Reading Garden and provide a baby grand piano, theater lighting and sound system for the community room, which will serve as a meeting place.

The Friends have also been instrumental in the plans for seven major fixed art installations that will be a part of the library and reflect the community’s emergence as a fine art center.
