FALLBROOK — The Community Cleanup/Recycling Day, sponsored by Keep Fallbrook Clean and Green on September 19, was a smashing success, breaking all previous Fallbrook records.
The large downtown parking lot behind the Art and Cultural Center at Main and Alvarado was a beehive of activity where more trash was collected, more volunteers participated, more e-waste was recycled, more papers were shredded and more batteries were turned in than in any prior year.
Final totals included 160 individuals who dropped off 10.71 tons of electrical equipment for recycling with 1-800-GOT-JUNK? Also turned in were 2,900 pounds of metal for recycling. Compared to last year, this equals three times the metal recycled and twice the amount of e-waste.
Shred-It of Vista processed 8,000 pounds of paper, which will be recycled into paper towels and tissues. The paper totals were almost 75 percent higher than 2008. They also “destroyed” 39 computer hard drives.
Dave Gleason of BP Batteries collected 90 acid/lead batteries – almost two-thirds more than last year – while Linda Buss of Fallbrook Waste and Recycling processed 2.03 tons of trash and litter collected by volunteers, 40 percent more than 2008.
Organizers said the success of the day is all due to both the extraordinary contingent of dedicated volunteers and the commitment of the community to the whole process of recycling and cleanup.
