Fallbrook VFW offers patriotic essay contest to students

Fallbrook VFW Post 1924 has two programs which encourage student participation and they are now taking entries.

The Voice of Democracy audio essay and Patriot’s Pen contests are wonderful opportunities for youth to express their views and stretch their writing and speech skills.

Voice of Democracy is open to students in grades nine through 12 who are enrolled in a Fallbrook public, private or parochial high school or home study program. This year’s theme is “Does America Still Have Heroes?”

Patriot’s Pen is open to sixth through eighth grade students and this year’s theme is “When is the Right Time to Honor Our Military Heroes?”

Deadline is November 1 to submit entries to Post 1924 at 1175 Old Stage Road. Awards begin on the local level with first place at $500, second place at $300 and third place at $200.

Prizes are then offered at the district, state and national levels. State winners receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC, to tour the city, meet national leaders, be honored by the VFW and receive a portion in national awards with the top scholarship being $30,000.

Entry forms, rules and additional information can be found at http://www.vfw.org or contacting Fallbrook VFW Auxiliary President Anne Richter at (760) 731-1041.
