Ramsey fifth at Barona with new axle

Jim Ramsey’s first Barona Speedway main event with a new axle on his 1970 Monte Carlo saw the Fallbrook driver finish fifth in the Pure Stocks race September 26.

“I’m happy with that,” Ramsey said. “I worked my way through the field pretty good. The car ran good.”

The main event performance was also satisfying to Ramsey due to his struggles in the heat race. Ramsey began the heat race on the pole but finished fifth.

“I just didn’t get it going in the heat,” he said. “It just wasn’t getting through the corners as well.”

Ramsey started the main event on the outside of the fifth row. “The track was really nice in the main,” he said. “It was biting good in the corners.”

Most of the positions Ramsey gained were late in the race.

In his previous race Ramsey had lost the spindle off his axle, forcing a replacement of the entire axle. Ramsey’s crew chief, Tim Deegan, enlisted the help of Sam Schwarzweller with the repair needed on the vehicle.

“It worked great,” Ramsey said of the new axle.

If weather permits the Pure Stocks will have their next race October 10.
