Girls' tennis wins again; this time against San Pasqual - Warrior netters finish first round of league play undefeated

Fallbrook High School’s girls’ tennis team completed the first round of Avocado League play undefeated in league matches.

After a September 24 home win over Torrey Pines which was decided on the tiebreaking criteria of games won after each team had won nine sets, the Warriors won their remaining first-round matches by a combined score of 64-8.

“We continue to be focused and working hard,” said Fallbrook coach Dave Ramirez.

The match which ended Torrey Pines’ streak of 215 consecutive league victories was followed by an 18-0 win October 1 at Mission Hills.

Fallbrook junior Jessica Willett, who was feeling ill when she defeated her final Torrey Pines opponent to save the match for Fallbrook, sat out the match against the Grizzlies.

Both of Fallbrook’s top singles players missed the Mission Hills match due to illness; Ramirez also had to replace junior

Hailey Johnson.

The depth of the Fallbrook team was shown by the 18-0 win which involved the Warrior reserves also sweeping their sets.

“That’s pretty awesome,” Ramirez said of an 18-0 win on the road without two top starters.

Fallbrook’s three matches the following week were all played at the Fallbrook Tennis Club.

The Warriors defeated La Costa Canyon 17-1 October 5, took a 12-6 victory against San Pasqual October 6, and closed out the week October 8 with a 17-1 triumph over Escondido.

Colds, flu, and other illnesses once again limited the participation of regulars. Willett played one match against Escondido before being replaced while Fallbrook’s top doubles team consisting of senior Michaela Johnson and freshman Phyllis Van den Berg were also pulled out after one match.

“The hard part’s keeping our girls healthy,” Ramirez said.

The win over Escondido brought Fallbrook’s overall record to 11-2, which includes a doubles tournament loss to Cathedral Catholic as well as a regular-format match loss to Cathedral.

“Looking forward to a good CIF outing,” Ramirez said. “I think we should be able to place well as a seed in CIF.”
