Chief gives Rotary fire season preview

FALLBROOK — North County Fire Chief Bill Metcalf previewed the “2009 Fall Fire Season” when he spoke to the Rotary Club of Fallbrook at a recent meeting.

Metcalf shared information on North County Fire Protection District’s preparation for the fire season, budget reductions and available resources, such as trucks, personnel, planes and helicopters.

He also reviewed critical aspects of the potential deadly fires the district has experienced, including wind conditions that can whip a fire into a firestorm, as witnessed in past years.

Metcalf spoke on what homeowners can do to be ready, which includes clearing brush and trees away from structures, having workable fire extinguishers available in the home, fresh batteries in the smoke alarms, planning an escape route and destination ahead of time and having a “To Go Box” ready with valuables, records, photographs and things that can’t be replaced.

The Chief provided a variety of take-home materials to everyone present.

Metcalf is a former member of the Fallbrook Rotary Club and is now a member and past president of Bonsall Rotary Club.

Guests are welcome at the Fallbrook Rotary’s weekly luncheon meetings. For information about upcoming speakers and topics, go to http://www.fallbrookrotary.org.
