Fallbrook Friends of the Arts take studio tour

FALLBROOK — The Friendly Village revealed a little more of itself when rarely viewed private art collections were made accessible for a studio tour on Saturday, October 17, for Fallbrook Friends of the Arts.

Massive sculptures, fabulous paintings, intricate theater set designs and the artists who created them mingled in their studios with “The Friends,” discussing theory, process and inspiration.

The Friends’ tour began on the campus of Fallbrook School of the Arts, where the group met with Michael Stutz, Peter Mitten and Chris Pardell.

These talented artists share studio space under the same corrugated roof at Fallbrook’s unique Foundry, where in addition to working on commissions from across the nation, each has been selected to create a significant piece for the new Fallbrook Library.

They revealed exciting new design ideas and introduced the attendees to sculpture projects currently in process.

At the opposite end of the facility, Jo Sebern demonstrated the art of ceramic Raku firing and Jack Janzen made “throwing” a ceramic pot look like a breeze.

From there, the group toured the art studio of Dixon Fish, a print maker and set designer whose acclaimed artwork has also been selected for inclusion in the new library.

Next on tour was the significant and eclectic private art collection of Jim and Victoria Helms, which includes paintings, glass art and small- and large-scale sculpture.

A beautiful lunch was provided on the patio overlooking their sculpture garden featuring large pieces by the “artist in residence,” Dr. Jim Helms.

The last stop on the tour was the home of renowned sculptor Les Perhacs. The group was treated to a full tour of his extraordinary work as well as his working studio and on-site foundry.

Fallbrook Friends of the Arts was formed to provide support to Fallbrook Center for the Arts Group, the umbrella organization that includes Brandon Gallery, Fallbrook Art Center, Fallbrook School of the Arts, Fallbrook Art in Public Places and the Fallbrook Arts Alliance.
