Ruiz helps patients achieve good oral health in relaxing atmosphere

The dental practice of Sharla Ruiz, DDS takes pride in offering outstanding general and cosmetic dentistry in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. The goal is to assist patients in experiencing a lifetime of good oral health and wellness.

Working in the field of dentistry for 19 years, Ruiz purchased the Fallbrook practice from David Warren, DDS nearly a year ago. As far as Ruiz is concerned, it was a magnificent decision.

“The people of Fallbrook have been very kind and accepting,” Ruiz said. “And our patients are just wonderful.”

During the transition, Ruiz made some impressive office upgrades. A flurry of improvements was made, culminating in an attractive remodel, including the waiting room area, which is now contemporary and cozy.

On the technical front, Ruiz is utilizing exceptional digital radiography equipment.

With new dental advancements always on the horizon, Ruiz is thrilled to be purchasing a LANAP (laser-assisted new attachment procedure) machine. LANAP excels in gum disease treatment.

“Instead of doing bone surgery, we can use laser to rejuvenate the area,” said Ruiz, pointing out that there is no more need to cut or stitch. This new technique offers faster healing time and far less discomfort than the traditional surgical method.

For Ruiz, achieving optimum oral health revolves around effective patient-dentist communication.

“The biggest thing I try to encourage patients to do is preventative dentistry,” she said, advocating fluoride treatments and fluoride toothpaste.

Ruiz said there is a marked connection between dental and overall body health. Poor oral health may lead to heart disease and strokes.

There is also evidence that a percentage of mothers who ignore their dental health have low birth-weight babies.

For patients over 40, Ruiz recommends a dental cleaning every three months. The natural wear and tear on teeth in this age group is noticeable.

“There are more areas where food can get caught in nooks and crannies,” Ruiz said, “so you need a little bit more help from a hygienist to keep it clean.”

Ruiz offers patients a host of possibilities for a great smile, including composite white fillings, porcelain tooth-colored crowns, Lumineers, porcelain veneers and teeth whitening.

Ruiz considers it a personal reward to watch the “fear to ease” transformation in her patients. Individuals who were once fear-stricken about sitting in a dental chair become at ease under her care.

“This is such a nice thing to see,” she said.

Ruiz has her own method when it comes to administering pain-free injections. It was taught to her by her own dentist, who was a professor at Loma Linda University.

The trick, she said, is to let the lidocaine drip very slowly. It takes longer, but it’s more beneficial to the patient.

However, for patients who need extra assistance getting past the fear, Ruiz may prescribe oral sedation or nitrous oxide.

The other members of the talented team who comprise Ruiz’s friendly dental practice are Jackie Amador, Marilyn Birdsong, Margaret Meyers, Kim Savage and Jayne Bergen.

Ruiz said she is “delighted” to work with such a dedicated and seasoned group of professionals.

Part of the Fallbrook community, Ruiz has supported several local organizations, such as the Angel Society and Fallbrook Food Pantry, and collected holiday gifts for military families.

Giving back to the community means a great deal to Ruiz. “I just want to thank Fallbrook for the warm welcome they have given me,” she said.
