Redmond honored as CIF girls' swim Coach of Year

The California Interscholastic Federation’s San Diego Section honored its 2008-2009 section Coach of the Year recipients at the October 27 CIF Board of Managers meeting, including Fallbrook High School girls’ swim coach Sean Redmond. Each sport’s coaches vote for the Coach of the Year recipient. “It’s an honor to be recognized by my peers, but I think it’s really more of a reflection of the overall program that we do at Fallbrook,” Redmond said.

The 25 coaches honored (the CIF has 28 sports, but badminton and roller hockey are only offered by a single conference and Vista’s Dave Spence won the annual award for both boys’ water polo and girls’ water polo) have a combined total of 575 years of coaching experience.

“Probably the best thing they do is their heart,” said CIF San Diego Section commissioner Dennis Ackerman.

Redmond has coached Fallbrook’s girls’ swim team for 20 years, including one season when he also coached the boys’ team.

He coached at Coronado High School for three years prior to beginning the Fallbrook portion of his career.

Redmond has been on the CIF swimming and diving advisory committee for 21 years and is the co-director of the CIF diving championship meet.

“This person is behind the scenes making sure our meets are run well,” Ackerman said.

Fallbrook High School also hosts three diving invitationals each year as well as the North County Conference championship meet.

During his tenure as a high school swimming and diving coach, Redmond has coached 25 academic All-Americans, a feat which requires at least a 3.75 grade point average for all four years and at least two varsity letters.

Six of Redmond’s academic All-Americans were on Fallbrook’s 2009 team.

Redmond is also in his second year as the freshman boys’ and girls’ water polo coach at Fallbrook.

He is also the aquatics director and head coach of the Fallbrook Associated Swim Team club. He will begin his 21st year with FAST in April.

Redmond attended Aberdeen High School in Aberdeen, MD.

The CIF Coach of the Year award is the second for Redmond, who was also presented with the recognition in 2004. “I’m just honored and privileged,” he said.
