Woman struck by pickup while crossing street in downtown Fallbrook

A woman was struck by a pickup while crossing the street at the intersection of Main and Alvarado at approximately 3:30 Wednesday afternoon.

According to witnesses, Joyce Danenburg, a 61-year-old from New Mexico, was crossing the intersection going east when J.D. Hughes, a 82-year-old Fallbrook resident driving a white Toyota T100 pickup turned south onto Main Ave. from East Alvarado, striking Danenburg, knocking her to the ground.

Hughes said the sun had “blinded him,” rendering him unable to see the woman. Witnesses said Danenburg never lost consciousness. Responding Sheriff’s deputies directed traffic around the scene while medical responders transported the woman to Palomar Hospital.

Doctors reported that Danenburg suffered open and closed skull fractures. Her current status is unknown.

“Neither individual was paying attention,” said CHP officer Eric Newbury. “While [Danenburg] had the right-of-way, she should have checked to make sure the driver had seen her. Pedestrians always need to be sure they are seen.”
