Why would any man leave this woman?

Always think of myself as quite normal and observing, as does the ‘Observer,’ in another paper, until my second trip to DC in my long life. I was overwhelmed, almost, at meeting this lady. I was dining in this scrumptious hotel wondering if this million mass of people was here for the same reason as me.

I turned to the next table and asked. There she was. Stunning. Yes, her visit was political, she said, and who am I?

Within minutes learned she was divorced, never traveled much, lived with her Mother, was a staunch Conservative, loved the crowd and what it all meant.

Why any man would leave this stunning woman, I had to know. They were married 21 years and the waitress he moved in with is 22, and blonde. My gorgeous new friend has brown hair with a touch of grey and admitting to 43.

Exactly half my age and here I am remembering when I was 17. Wow, and I said it out loud! Wish I could have met your mom 45 years ago. Really a stupid blurting but she smiled her infectious smile, turned to her companion and said, “I want you to meet my Mother. My father died two years ago. We will both be here for breakfast in the morning.”

Twenty minutes. Never saw them again. I went across street to the Hilton for breakfast. Out of my league, but to this moment I wonder where they live. I never asked. Stunned!
