Overturf becomes treasurer for Carlsbad-Oceanside Toastmasters

Bonsall’s Rich Overturf is the new treasurer for Carlsbad-Oceanside Toastmasters.

In December, the club members elected Overturf to the office for a term that began Jan. 1 and will run through June 30.

“We’re a really solid club, and I’m so delighted to become treasurer once again after all these years,” Overturf said. “I haven’t been a treasurer of a club for about 15 years, and I’m much looking forward to it.”

Carlsbad-Oceanside Toastmasters, which meets on Wednesday nights at the Salvation Army building in Oceanside, currently has 28 members (Overturf is the only member who commutes from Fallbrook or Bonsall).

Toastmasters International was founded in 1924 to enhance the public speaking skills of members, and in 2006 the Toastmasters certification program was modified to provide both a communication track and a leadership track. The Competent Leader certification is the first designation in the leadership track, and Overturf holds that leadership level.

Overturf joined Toastmasters in 1989. He had been in the U.S. State Department’s Foreign Service before his retirement in 1988. “I had been speaking foreign languages for 23 years overseas,” he said. “I felt like I had lost my articulation in my own home tongue.”

“It’s been a wonderful experience,” Overturf said of Toastmasters.
