"Death and Life are in the power of the tongue" - Proverbs 18:21

We have all experienced other people’s words spoken to us that have affected us either for the good or for the bad. And we have spoken words to others that have resulted in blessing them or hurting them. But do we fully realize how our words affect us when we speak them? What we say affects the one who is speaking as well as others who hear those words. Death and life is in the power of the tongue.

How do we change what we speak? It has been said that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks, in other words, what we believe in our heart will come out our mouth. If we want to change what we have been speaking, we must change our thoughts. How do we do that? We can start feeding our thought-life with things that line up with the attitudes we want. For example, if we want to believe that there is hope on the horizon, we need to surround ourselves with reasons for hope, thoughts of hope, thoughts of good and not of harm. We need to expect good to come our way. We might have to change what we watch on TV, what we read, our attitudes, and to whom we listen. We need to recognize every little good thing that happens around us and enjoy it. As our attitudes change, our words will also change.

Action: Seek to bless and not to harm with our words.
