"Shining Blades" bring home the gold

FALLBROOK – Sophie Grizzle of Fallbrook and Marcelina Roccoforte of Bonsall, as members of San Diego’s synchronized ice skating team, the Shining Blades, helped bring home the coveted gold medal from the 2010 Midwestern/Pacific Coast Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships held in Iowa, Jan. 28-30.

The undefeated team, skating at the pre-juvenile level, competed against six other teams from the Pacific Coast. The team is coached by Susan Morrison and Brian Thayer of San Diego Ice Arena in Mira Mesa. Twelve girls, ages 9 to 14, all San Diego County residents, comprise the team, including Sophie and Marcelina who are both 10 years old.

Sophie has been skating since 2005 and Marcelina since 2003. Sophie said, “I have loved skating since I was little and I love friends. When I have both together, I am making memories forever.” For Marcelina, “The best thing abut sync skating is all the friends that we have that are like family.”

The Shining Blades skated to a musical medley from “Star Wars,” which incorporated both artistic and technical elements. Synchronized figure skating teams are judged on speed, technical difficulty, artistic ability, transitions and most importantly the ability to be in unison while executing all the elements.

In preparation for competition, the team has been training since May 2009 and has spent hours both on and off the ice to perfect their skills and physical conditioning. After placing 1st in their competitions at Aliso Viejo, Anaheim, Kroc Center San Diego and Sectionals in Iowa, they now look forward to the Winter Classic in Anaheim on Feb. 14 and California State Games, March 6 at their home rink, San Diego Ice Arena.

The team will perform an exhibition skate on Monday, Feb. 15, at 5 p.m. at the San Diego Ice Arena, 11048 Ice Skate Place, San Diego. This performance is free and open to the public.
