Fallbrook U19 ruggers win club season opener

The Fallbrook Rugby Club began its under-19 club play Feb. 6 with a 38-5 win over the South Orange County Gators.

“I don’t think we lost a line-out the whole match,” Fallbrook coach Mike Majewski said of the situation, in which both teams seek to gain control of a ball brought back in bounds. “That’s one of the things we really pride ourselves.”

The game was originally scheduled to be played in San Clemente, but the week’s rain forced the match to be moved to Fallbrook. “Still played in a downpour,” Majewski said.

“The rain did not let up,” Majewski said. “It was cold and very challenging.”

Fallbrook had a 12-5 halftime lead. “Tough first half,” Majewski said. “The second half we came out and rolled all over them.”

Fallbrook players John Hayden and Kyle Volan were both paired against opponents who are also on the Eagles, which is the under-20 national team. Hayden and Volan had two tries apiece.

Jake Munsinger and Gabe Edwards each scored one try.
