Fallbrook High School’s boys tennis team opened the 2010 season with an 18-0 win March 4 at Valley Center High School.
“I’ve got a lot of new kids playing doubles,” said Fallbrook coach Bill Lenaway. “It was kind of a good match to break those kids in.”
Fallbrook’s three singles players, senior Jonathan Wechter, junior Sho Adachi, and junior Spencer Merchat, were all on the varsity in 2009. The returning players also include three juniors who will play doubles for the Warriors this year, Stuart Henderson, Tyler McCune, and Tony Derrigo.
Juniors Matt Jacobs, Dylan Dawkins and Evan Nagata and sophomore Tyler Ocheltree were all on the junior varsity squad in 2009, and for any given match three of those four newcomers will round out the doubles teams.
“We are still kind of searching for the right combination,” Lenaway said. “I think we’re going to have to be a little flexible in the beginning.”
The Warriors lost last year’s top two doubles teams to graduation.
“I’m not going to be surprised if we struggle a little bit in doubles early in the season,” Lenaway said.
The inexperience showed in Fallbrook’s March 5 match, when the Warriors traveled to Great Oak High School and lost to the Wolf Pack by a 13-5 score.
“I wouldn’t say it was a total surprise,” Lenaway said of the loss.
“We filled in with some JV players who are going to have to get used to the competition,” Lenaway said of his newcomers. “It’s definitely a different level.”
The presence of only one senior on the squad makes the outlook brighter for 2011 than for the early part of this year, when the Warrior players will be gaining experience as they play.
“I think we’ve got a real challenging schedule,” Lenaway said. “We’ve got some work to do if we’re going to finish where we’d like to in our league.”
