Marine Corps reports death of Sgt. Nicholas Smith

CAMP PENDLETON - The United States Marine Corps mourns the loss of Sergeant Nicholas J. Smith who was found unresponsive at his residence in Oceanside at noon on March 14. Smith was pronounced dead one hour later by the San Diego Medical Examiner.

The incident is currently under investigation.

Smith, a 25-year-old warehouse clerk from Chicago, Ill., was assigned to Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton.

Smith enlisted in the Marine Corps July 12, 2002.

His personal service awards include the Navy Unit Commendation, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family,” said an USMC representative.
