Fallbrook AAUW delegate travels to United Nations

FALLBROOK – American Association of University Women (AAUW) California State Director and Fallbrook resident, Sherry Ludwig, visited the United Nations (UN) recently to influence policy affecting human rights for women and girls in the United States and abroad. Ludwig was part of a delegation of 8,000 women who converged in the United Nations in New York City for the 54th UN Commission on the Status of Women.

This year’s commission theme was Beijing +15 and focused on a review of the progress of global human rights and a discussion of the UN’s commitment to what has become known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s), to be achieved by 2015.

The MDG’s are eight goals that respond to the world’s main development challenges: eradicating poverty, promoting gender equality, achieving universal primary education, improving maternal health, reducing child mortality, combating HIV/AIDS, ensuring environmental sustainability and creating a global partnership with undeveloped nations.

Throughout the events of the week, Ludwig and other delegates had the opportunity to take part in discussions about women’s empowerment with key national and international leaders, including Susan Rice, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and Meryl Frank, U.S. Representative to the UN Commission on the Status of Women.
