Hughey, Sellers play at National Field Hockey Indoor Tournament, win pool

Fallbrook High School juniors Lauren Hughey and Shelby Sellers participated in the National Field Hockey Indoor Tournament March 4-7 in Virginia Beach and were part of the San Diego County team that won its pool.

Hughey and Sellers played for Rush Field Hockey, which is coached by Tara Jelley Danielson. Hughey, a forward, had two goals and three assists. Sellers, who played center midfield, had one assist. Rush Field Hockey won Pool I of the under-19 division.

“To have Shelby and Lauren do so well was great,” said Fallbrook High School varsity field hockey coach Kathy Waite. “I was so pleased.”

In addition to Hughey and Sellers, Fallbrook High School senior Jamie Garcia was selected as an alternate for participation in the tournament. “Great to have that many in there,” Waite said.

The Rush Field Hockey team consisted of ten field players plus one goalkeeper. The players tried out Jan. 17 at the Escondido Sports Center. Rush finished pool play with a 5-1-1 record despite starting with a loss and a tie. The Californians began with a 3-1 loss to Spitfire Red of Columbia, Maryland. Rush then played We-R-One Matrix of Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, to a 1-1 tie.

Rush’s third game was against TCOYO Yang of Virginia Beach. The game was scoreless until San Pasqual High School senior Mallory Albini put a ball into the net during the game’s final 30 seconds to give Rush a 1-0 victory.

Rush then took consecutive 4-1 victories over Peninsula Lightning Blue of Gloucester, Virginia, and Jackals 1 of Rockville, Maryland. Following a 3-0 victory over RAM of Littlestown, Pennsylvania, Rush concluded the tournament with a 4-0 win against Swift Creek Fusion of Midlothian, Virginia.
