ESCONDIDO – Now through May 2 Welk Resort is offering performances of the “Pirates of Penzance” starring Broadway veteran Sue Goodman, Randall Dodge, Richard Bermudez, Karenssa LeGear and Bart Williams.
“Pirates of Penzance” is a classic Gilbert & Sullivan comic operetta that feels like a slapstick, uproarious musical. Breathtaking voices are featured in this romp through life by swashbuckling pirates, beautiful maidens, a doddering old Major General and bumbling police.
Young Frederic is apprenticed to a pirate by mistake due to his nursemaid being hard of hearing. His father wanted him apprenticed to a pilot, but the mistake grew into a relationship. Upon his 21st birthday he is out of his indentures, and vows to destroy the pirates due to his sense of moral duty. The Pirate King and Ruth, the nursemaid, concoct a ridiculous plot to keep him in the fold. They tell him he was born on Feb 29 of leap year, so he is really only five and a half years of age. Chaos ensues and the pirates end up defeating the Keystone Cops, marrying the daughters, and all ends happily.
“Pirates of Penzance” is directed and choreographed by Ray Limon and plays through May 2, with no shows on Tuesdays.
A buffet brunch including lunch and breakfast items may be enjoyed at 10:30 a.m. with seating for the Pirates show at 12:45 p.m. for a 1 p.m. curtain.
Show times include matinees on Wed., Thurs., Sat., and Sun., and evening shows on Thursdays and Saturdays. More information is available at http://www.welktheatre.com or by calling (760) 749-3000.
