Horn proposes sexual offender pin map and e-mail alert system for County Web site

SAN DIEGO - San Diego County Board of Supervisors Vice Chairman Bill Horn will recommend to the full board on May 18 approval of exploring the implementation of an up-to-date Sexual Offender Pin Map on the County Web site that shows all sexual registrants in San Diego County. Also in his proposal is an e-mail alert system showing recent arrivals of registered sex offenders.

“We need to increase community awareness of dangerous sexual predators that move into neighborhoods,” said Horn. “An e-mail alert system would let County residents know of registered sex offenders living in their neighborhood, especially those who have just recently moved into an area. This would ensure that residents are given up-to-date information without having to check sexual registrants pin maps on a weekly basis.”

“The tragic deaths of Chelsea King and Amber DuBois remind us to remain vigilant, not only in keeping the justice system accountable but also in providing families with information they can use,” said Horn. “Sexual predators lurk in the shadows of every community. An alert system will keep a light of vigilance on their movements.”

Should an e-mail alert system be approved for the County, after signing up, any time a person is added to the sex offenders registry and moves into the neighborhood of the subscriber, that person will receive an e-mail containing the offender’s name, address, photo, and a link to additional information about them including a map showing where they live, their crime, conviction date, and more.

“Sexual predators are known for what they do rather than what they look like,” Horn said. “Once in a neighborhood, they will frequent places children gather—at sports fields, schools, and churches. We need to have as many resources as possible that will increase our vigilance. While the State of California’s Attorney General maintains a statewide sexual registrant’s pin map, we can always do more to keep County residents safe and informed and I believe an e-mail alert system is one way to accomplish that.”
