Petty Officer Zarian Wood killed in Afghanistan

CAMP PENDLETON - The United States Marine Corps has announced that Petty Officer Third Class Zarian A. Wood, died at Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan, May 16 of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device blast that occurred in Helmand Province, while on dismounted patrol May 14.

Wood, a 29-year-old hospital corpsman from Houston, Texas, was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Wood enlisted in the Navy May 1, 2006. This was his second combat deployment.

His personal service awards include the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

The Marines and sailors of the 1st Marine Division mourn the loss of Petty Officer 3rd Class Wood.
