WASHINGTON D.C. - The Pentagon released the names yesterday of three Camp Pendleton-based Marines who died in combat over the weekend in Afghanistan.
Killed in Helmand Province on Sunday were Sgt. Brandon C. Bury, 26, of Kingwood, Texas; Lance Cpl. Derek Hernandez, 20, of Edinburg, Texas; and Cpl. Donald M. Marler, 22, of St. Louis, Mo., according to the Department of Defense.
They were members of the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force.
“On behalf of all Californians, Maria and I extend our thoughts and prayers to the loved ones of Sergeant Brandon Bury, Lance Corporal Derek Hernandez and Corporal Donald Marler during this difficult time," said Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in a press statement. "These three brave and dedicated Marines selflessly fought to defend our nation’s freedoms, and their sacrifice will not be forgotten.”
In honor of Sgt. Bury, Lance Cpl. Hernandez and Cpl. Marler, California State Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.
