Re: 'Where was Obama on Memorial Day?' [Letter, Village News, 6-10-10]

I read in disbelief that Jim Lowery would make accusations about our serving president based on some right wing rag news before checking his facts. He could have been correct if he had said that President Obama set the precedent of being the first black president recognizing our veterans at a venue other than Arlington Cemetery on Memorial Day.

However, previous presidents also not visiting Arlington Cemetery on Memorial Day include President Reagan (three times – one additional time he was in the hospital) and President George H. W. Bush (four times – he preferred Kennebunkport although he was an honored veteran). President Clinton, as it turns out, was there each year, and President George W. Bush only missed once when he was in France, and went to Normandy instead. Ref: http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/memorialday.asp.

I do appreciate Mr. Lowery’s years of military service, and that of all the other veterans that we honor on Memorial Day. However, I do not think viciously false accusations against our president does justice to the debt we owe them or to our country.
