FBA announces 2010 Outstanding Landscape awards

FALLBROOK – The Fallbrook Beautification Alliance (FBA) has recently announced the winners of the Fallbrook 2010 Outstanding Landscape awards.

The winner of this year’s residential award was the Brand Family home located at

1144 Lydia Lane.

“The Brand’s landscape features a dry riverbed among beautiful, colorful plantings,” explained Mary Jo Bacik of the FBA. “The garden holds an antique wagon and other interesting treasures surrounded by flowering plants.”

St. Peter’s Catholic Church won the award for best non-profit organization landscape.

“St. Peter’s has used an assortment of plants to attract the eye with color as well

as shape,” said Bacik. “The gardens circle the newly built church, framing fountains and sculpture, as well as extending along the entrance to the school and office buildings.” The church is located at the corner of Stagecoach Lane and Fallbrook Street.

An apartment complex located at 226 Hawthorne Street (at the corner of Mission Road.) won the best landscape award for multi-family living.

“Owner Joyce Warner has made this property a showcase with drought tolerant plants that wrap around the corner on both streets,” said Bacik. “She has used colorful mulch to set off the plants.”

The winner of the most attractive water-wise landscape was Fallbrook Fertilizer, located at 215 W. Fallbrook Street.

“The plantings at Fallbrook Fertilizer have been carefully chosen for their drought tolerant properties and their colorful appearance,” explained Bacik. “The plants are arranged around an old, colorful wagon and the gardens continue across the front of the property.”

Grangetto’s Farm & Garden Supply won the most attractive commercial landscape award.

“Grangetto’s recently redesigned its gardens along Alvarado to showcase a mix of Mediterranean and native plantings,” said Bacik. “The gardens, which are also drought tolerant, create a beautiful backdrop for their south-facing location.” Grangetto’s is located at 530 E. Alvarado Street.

The program, established in 2008, is designed to recognize the efforts of individuals and organizations that contribute to community pride through excellence in landscaping, beautification and continued property maintenance. Nominations were receive in five of the award categories which include: residential, commercial, multi-family, non-profit and a new category introduced this year to recognize water-wise landscaping.

A panel of volunteer judges visited each of the nominated properties to select one winner from each category. All submissions had to be visible to the public from the street, and the sites were judged on the plants used, landscape design, maintenance, and how the landscape complements the structural features of the location.

“We had wonderful nominations again this year” said awards chairperson Karen Feyler of the Fallbrook Beautification Alliance. “We hope that the public has the opportunity to take a look at these outstanding demonstrations of creative and beautiful landscaping.”

A sign acknowledging the first place award winners has been posted at each location. The award winning sites may also be viewed at
