24-year-old Marine Cpl. Larry D. Harris Jr. dies in Afghanistan

SAN DIEGO - A Camp Pendleton-based Marine killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan was identified today by the Pentagon.

Cpl. Larry D. Harris Jr., 24, of Thornton, Colo., was killed Thursday in Helmand Province, according to the Department of Defense.

Harris was a member of the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force.

''He gave his life to defend our nation's freedom, and his sacrifice will never be forgotten,'' Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said in a statement. ''On behalf of all Californians, we extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of Corporal Harris during this difficult time.''

The mortarman served in Iraq in 2007.
