Controlled burns scheduled on Camp Pendleton over next few days

CAMP PENDLETON - North County residents will see smoke from Camp Pendleton today and for the next few days as the base fire department burns off dry vegetation.

The controlled burns are scheduled as a training exercise for the Camp Pendleton Fire Department, and will remove brush that could fuel a wildfire as the summer heats up, base officials said.

Firefighters plan to burn a total of 200 acres in an area known as the San Onofre Shelf.
