Earthquake measuring 3.3 shakes the southland

Authorities report that a magnitude 3.3 earthquake struck last night near the same area that a magnitude 5.4 temblor hit on Wednesday, according to a preliminary report from the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake was reported at 10:50 p.m. about 16 miles north northwest of Borrego Springs and 17 miles south southwest of La Quinta.

No damage or injuries were immediately reported, said Lt. Steve Nolan of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Wednesday's quake was felt as far away as the Los Angeles area, and was described as two sharp jolts followed by up to 30 seconds of swaying. Numerous a...
