Cpl. Julio Vargas the second Camp Pendleton Marine killed this week

CAMP PENDLETON - A second Camp Pendleton-based Marine killed in combat in Afghanistan this week has been identified by the Pentagon.

Cpl. Julio Vargas, 23, of Sylmar, was killed Tuesday, July 20, in Helmand Province, according to the Department of Defense.

He was assigned to 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton.

On Sunday, Gunnery Sgt. Christopher Eastman, 28, of Moose Pass, Alaska, died in combat in Helmand Province. He was a member of the 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton.

Since early June, Camp Pendleton has lost about a dozen men in the conflict, about one a week. More than 1,000 U.S. military personnel have died in the nearly nine-year-old war in Afghanistan, which has become America's longest war.
