Re: 'President promised change' [Letter, Village News, 7-15-10]

Mr. Wright, if you were offended by something I said in Mr. Lowery’s defense, I apologize.

My comments were not directed specifically at you. The subject, however, is timely. In an opinion article in the WSJ, Fred Barnes wrote about a secret sect of left-wing journalists formed in early 2008 when Obama’s candidacy was in jeopardy. Private e-mails were exchanged among this group on how to deal with the situation.

A writer from The Washington Independent proposed attacking Obama’s critics as racists. He wrote, “…take one of them – Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares and call them racists… This makes them ‘sputter’ with rage, which in turn leads to overreaction and self-destruction”

Ultimately the idea was scrapped – not on ethical grounds but because it might backfire. Barnes commented, “What was particularly pathetic about the scheme to smear Mr. Obama’s critics was labeling them as racists. The accusation has been made so frequently in recent years, without evidence to back it up, that it has little effect. It’s now the last refuge of liberal scoundrels.”

I can’t agree with you that Obama has declared himself on anything. His pre-election declarations on what he would do as president all turned out to be colossal lies. He jammed through an $800B stimulus bill and a $1T healthcare package without any public support. He’s created hundreds of new federal agencies and thousands of new federal jobs along with a crushing national debt.

He might have mentioned this before the polls opened in November 2008.
