SDG&E offers $100,000 in grants to Fire Safe councils, CERT

SAN DIEGO – On July 26, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) launched a grant program available to San Diego County-based Fire Safe Councils (FSC) and Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs). This $100,000 fund will provide these organizations with support for requests in the areas of emergency preparedness training, community education and outreach, and volunteer recruitment and retention programs.

“Over the past few years we’ve been growing our relationship with the CERTs and Fire Safe Councils serving San Diego County,” said Dave Geier, vice president of electric operations for SDG&E. “These volunteers and their organizations play critical roles in helping prepare our communities for emergencies. They are often the first line of information and support in an emergency and we are thrilled to be working in partnership with them to help in the areas of fire prevention, emergency response, and creating safer neighborhoods.”

This program was initially launched in 2009 and provided 30 CERT and FSC organizations with grants totaling nearly $75,000. The 2010 program will offer select, individual CERT and FSC groups an award of up to $2,500.

“In San Diego County, we live with year-round threat of wildfires and we have over 70 active Fire Safe Councils that may benefit from these grants,” said Marty Leavitt, president of the Fire Safe Council of San Diego County. “The funding can go a long way toward helping local fire safe councils meet their defensible space goals and can help measurably reduce fire damage to private properties.”

An online application and program guidelines are available by request by calling SDG&E’s Community Relations department toll free at (877) 767-SDGE (7343) or by sending an e-mail with contact information to [email protected]. Completed applications are due by Friday, August 6 and awards will be made to organizations in mid-September.
