Three male Marines, estimated to be in their 20s, sustained injuries in a single-car accident this morning at approximately 7:15 a.m. at the intersection of East Mission Road and Santa Margarita Drive. It took emergency responders 30 minutes to free one of the Marines that was trapped in the vehicle as a result of the wreck.
"It took 30 minutes to get him out of the vehicle; he sustained life-threatening injuries," said John Buchanan, public information officer for North County Fire Protection District.
Mercy Air was called to transport the gravely injured Marine to a nearby trauma center, which in this case was Inland Valley Medical Center in Murrieta, due to the heavy fog conditions in other surrounding areas.
"The other two Marines sustained moderate injuries and were taken by ground ambulance to Palomar Hospital," said Buchanan.
An early report from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) indicated the vehicle "spun out" at the intersection of East Mission and Santa Margarita Drive and came to rest in bushes off the roadway.
"The vehicle came to rest on the property owned by Fallbrook Public Utility District," said CHP officer Ray Scheidnes.
The cause of the accident and the names of those in the vehicle has not yet been released by the California Highway Patrol.
