No traffic fatalities in SD County during first 36 hours of Labor Day weekend

SAN DIEGO COUNTY - The California Highway Patrol said today it hasn't had any reports of traffic fatalities in San Diego County during the first 36 hours of the Labor Day holiday weekend.

The reporting period began at 6:01 p.m. Friday and statistics were reported out at 6 a.m.

The CHP arrested 48 motorists across the county on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs since 6:01 p.m. Friday. That total is for CHP arrests on freeways and on surface streets in unincorporated areas, and does not include DUI arrests by city police departments.

Last year, there were no reports of traffic fatalities and 60 motorists were arrested for drunken driving during the same time period.

Statewide, this year, the CHP reported 990 drunken driving arrests by its officers, and six traffic fatalities in all 58 counties, during the period. That compares to 923 CHP drunken driving arrests and eight traffic fatalities statewide last year.
