Volunteers honored at Save Our Forest picnic

FALLBROOK— Year in and year out, volunteers with the Save Our Forest Organization (SOF), a part of the Fallbrook Land Conservancy (FLC), work hard behind the scenes not looking for recognition. Members plant and maintain trees around town, clean roadways and parkways, and put on major environmental educational programs with the schools.

Once a year, every August, the work parties cease, replaced by a “party-party” at the FLC Palomares House. In addition to simply having fun and enjoying a great barbeque, Jackie Heyneman, who heads the SOF organization, honors volunteers in a program.

This year’s special recognition for Volunteer-of-the-Year was the highlight of the party. Greg MacDonald was the honoree who has served in the area of public relations for the group for several years. MacDonald’s well-planned publicity and variety of articles has kept residents informed of SOF community efforts as well as attracting new volunteers. “[MacDonald] provides the outreach for more support which is vital to the types of community service we provide,” said Heyneman.

During fiscal year 209-2010, volunteers logged over 2,000 hours in tree maintenance and educational programs in the Fallbrook area. Additional volunteers are always needed; if interested, call Jackie Heyneman at (760) 728-0889.
